Flat tire anyone?

It was Sunday morning at the District Conference. President Anderson had to leave to go back to the mission home (on another island) for an emergency. So we all had to divvy up the talks to take the place of Pres. and Sister Anderson. The Hunts did the speaking at the youth meeting. So, Elder Ganir took the car that had developed a flat tire over night, to be fixed. He takes a member with him to show him the way. He gets to a vulcanizing shop (they fix tires?) Elder Ganir asked if he fixed tires and he said yes, but I don't have a jack. We had just checked out of the hotel and the trunk was overloaded with luggage and other stuff. Elder Ganir had to unload the trunk to get his jack. Then he had to jack up the car, take off the lug nuts and take off the tire, then...the fellow would fix it. He found a small nail in the tire. He put some rubber in the hole and pushed it in with a larger nail????? Anyway, the tire got fixed. The fellow even put the tire back on the car for Elder Ganir and, it only cost 80 cents and a lot of effort by Elder Ganir. Elder Ganir then put the jack away and loaded up the car. Sweating, with a few small grease spots on his shirt, Elder Ganir made it back to the church to speak in Conference. We could not take a chance and have a flat tire on the way home late at night. All in a day's work, for couple missionaries.

Notice the plastic bottle in the tree.......

It is called Tuba. It ferments in the tree and then it naturally fills this plastic bottle three times a day. They serve it at the bar at the hotel we stayed at. No, we did not try it!

Food is a little hard to find on Marinduque because there are no grocery stores. So we bring things to eat. But..........

One of the best restaurants in our mission is on Marinduque, go figure? It is called Barbarosa's. They have real steak, real fried potato slices and real green salad and macaroni salad. They even have Cordon Bleu. They also have FRESH strawberry milkshakes and fresh coconut milkshakes (very good!!) So we had peanut butter sandwiches for lunch and steak for dinner. Elder Valdez is in front with the other couple, the Hunts.

Agusto Lim and his wife. This picture is for you Aries.

Agusto Lim was the first stake president in the Philippines. He was the first temple president at the Manila Temple, too. He was a mission president, a bishop and Area President and a seventy. He was born on Marinduque and wanted to retire here. He is still strong , willing and able to labor in the church. He and his wife came to the District Conference we spoke and trained at. He is a good man. We asked someone to take a picture of us all and this is the best we got out of the whole batch.
