We didn't take this picture, but thought we should blog it because it is nice.

Jonel 12 Gian 11
When asked what they were going to do with the money they earned, Jonel said his dad doesn't have work so he is going to buy rice. The cost of rice is going up and up just like the cost of gas. It is really hurting the poor. He said he can buy a cup of uncooked rice for 5 pesos which is about 12 cents). I didn't know you could buy just a cup. Over here you can by very small amouts of food because people live day by day, earning sometimes just enough to buy one cup of rice. We thought Jonel was very thoughtful of his father. These boys were happy to work for a short time and earn some pesos. We also fed them before they went home. We had a nice merienda (a snack between meals)
I think it was their only meal that morning so far.

Gian and Jonel
These two boys are ages 12 and 11. We hired them to cut the grass in the field behind them which is next to our house. This is an empty lot that everyone on our street just throws their trash and burns too. We have the smoke come into our bedroom and bathroom. Some days are worse than others. There are no law mowers here. Everything is done by hand. We see VERY FEW weed wackers. We paid them to cut the grase next the our compound wall behind the boys. If we don't keep the grass cut the snakes will climb up the grass and get into our compound. No thanks! We don't cut the grass on the whole lot, just half of the lot which is next to our compound and up to the burning pile. I don't want Wilson to have to walk thru the tall grass to burn either. These two boys are so cute. Jonel is amazingly smart. He speaks fabulous English. He can translate at the drop of a hat.

This is a normal kitchen for most of the people we know.
